Beschrijving:
Coming of age during the Industrial Revolution, the 1839 invention of photography documented and furthered the American Dream of endless progress and unlimited growth. Americans, with their characteristic fervor and optimism, adopted and embraced this most democratic of art forms as their own.
George Eastman’s development of the flexible film and the Kodak camera in 1888 offered each and every American the opportunity to become a pictorial documentary maker of his and her own life. The family album turned more precious than gold.
The camera became the third eye. At once mentor and judge of success and failure, it saw and recorded historic event. It grew into a tool for political propaganda, while it brought home the horrors of wars and the tranquillity of peace. It memorialized the grandeur and beauty of nature, and it brought into the parlor pictures of far-off lands. It seduced people to move west in search of gold and glory dangling the carrot of wide open spaces in front of American Dreamers.
Photography sold Americans on themselves, their future, and most of all on their dreams. A marriage of art, chemistry and commerce, photography embodied the American entrepreneurial ideal and propelled a manifest destiny of the spirit.
THE PHOTOGRAPH AND THE AMERICAN DREAM takes a broad look at the role photography played in fostering the American Dream between 1840-1940. The photographs have been selected from the Stephen White Collection II by co-curators, Andreas Blühm and Stephen White.
